From Court to Caravan Chinese Tomb Sculptures from the Collection of Anthony
M. Solomon
October 9, 2002 - February 16, 2003
Elderly
Male Figure
Northern Wei period, first third of the 6th century
Gray earthenware with cold-painted red pigment over white ground
This enigmatic figure is virtually without parallel among tomb figures
of this period. He may possibly represent an actor or a magician.
The tight-sleeved coat thrown over his shoulders is a garment typically
worn by Central Asians or nomads, rather than Chinese. It is possible
that he originally held in his hands an object modeled in a perishable
material.
