Xenophobia and hate toward Asians and Asian Americans is a well-documented part of American history — from the "Yellow Peril" to Japanese internment. Over the past year, hate crimes targeting Asians and Asian Americans have increased, as a subset of the U.S. population has blamed for the COVID-19 pandemic on people of Asian descent.
These ongoing instances of anti-Asian hate came to a head nationally when eight people were killed in a mass shooting spree at three spas in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Six of the victims were Asian women.
In this episode of Asia In-Depth, Asia Society’s President and CEO Kevin Rudd talks with two members of the Asia 21 Young Leaders network: Bing Chen, chairman and co-founder of Asian diaspora cultural collective Gold House, and Sylvia Kim, General Partner of impact investing firm CerraCap Cares. They discuss the role that individuals, community organizers, business leaders, and legislators can play in stopping anti-Asian hate and violence.
